We were asked to help with two 4 year old Kentucky girls who were living outside in a pen...Zola, a Boxer and Abby, a Boxer mix. We posted for foster homes and were blessed to have two volunteers step up to foster the girls so we started working on a plan to get them picked up and to Heartland Veterinary Hospital for their needed vetting. We knew that Abby was already spayed but Zola was not and both girls needed all routine vetting including vaccinations, heartworm test, fecal check, etc. But what we didn't know is that Abby had a severely broken leg. We were told that she had a "gimpy" leg and it had been that way for a while but we were absolutely not prepared for what we saw when she was picked up. We had a plan to get Abby all vetted and to her foster home the next day and Zola was going to stay until after her spay surgery as the clinic only had room to keep one of the girls for a little while but when we saw Abby's leg we had to scramble to change all of our plans so that Abby would be the one staying at the clinic and Zola would be leaving as soon as possible. Huge thanks to Heartland for squeezing Zola in for her spay surgery and she went to her foster dad the very next day. Abby was all checked over and got her routine vetting done and had some x-rays taken of her leg and it was found that her leg was badly broken a while back they believe, and it began to heal but because it was not supported with a splint or anything, it broke again. This poor girl had to be in so much pain but you never would have known as she is just the sweetest thing ever. They splinted the leg to keep it supported and consulted with the orthopedic surgeon on what needs to be done. She will need a plate put in her leg and they are looking at having to shorten the bone and shaving off some of the callous to attach the plate.

UPDATE 10/23:  Abby had successful leg repair surgery on 10/5.  She was moved to her Indiana foster home on 10/17 and she will be on crate rest/leash walking only for a few more weeks of recovery.  She is just the BEST girl!!!!!!!!!!

UPDATE 11/21:  Abby is off of restrictions and can now run and play with the pack!  She did GREAT with all intros to her foster brothers and sisters, both canine and feline, and is just the sweetest girl!!!  Abby is all ready to find her furever family!!
