The shelter was never given a straight answer on why Buggy (now called Birdie by her foster family) was surrendered but we are guessing it had something to do with her having non-stop potty accidents due to being full of intestinal parasites.  The shelter assumed she had parvo and needed her out of there ASAP due to them having a lot of puppies at that them and they reached out to us for rescue help.  One look at that face....how could we say no?!?  Thanks to the lightning fast action of our volunteers, Buggy was pulled from the shelter and moved to her Illinois foster home within hours.  After seeing the vet and getting all checked over and all tests run, she was parvo negative, fecal positive for hookworm and whipworm and unfortunately, even at her young age, tested positive for heartworm disease.  We finally have the parasites under control and she has started on her pre-heartworm treatment medications.

Birdie needs a home who will help her learn some basic manners and training and will be patient with her as she continues to work on her housebreaking.  She will crate up but is spending way too much time crated in her current foster home and she needs some mental and physical exercise to get some of that puppy behavior out.  She did stay with a volunteer for a little over a week while her current foster family was on vacation and she did much better at pottying outside and being redirected when playing too rough or getting too wound up.

UPDATE:  Birdie is all settled in at her Minnesota foster home.  Her foster mom & dad are working on some puppy behaviors and she is doing fantastic on pottying outside!!  She will start heartworm treament on June 17th.

8/25/19 UPDATE:  Buggy/Birdie now known as Sweet Pea is all finished with her heartworm treatment and is doing great!!  She is getting back into the swing of sociailzing with other dogs and has a couple of very interested adoptive families!!

9/18/19:  Sweet Pea has started obedience classes so she will be allllll ready when her new family finds her!  She had her first class and is working on some manners, mostly in learning how to control her puppy self when meeting new friends.  She is not aggressive in any way, she just gets overexcited and is inappropriate with her jumping and nipping.  Sweet Pea has had kind of tough way to go without much of a "childhood" so her puppy behavior isn't anything out of the ordinary, especially after being on crate rest for so long after her heartworm treatment.  As with all young dogs, consistency, structure and socialization are key.  Please check back in on her progress!!
