|
Tucker will be joining us on 10/24...he will be fostering in the Chicago area. He is approximately 8 years old, tested very well with other dogs at the shelter but is NOT good with cats. Please check back in soon for updates on Tucker!!
11/2: Tucker arrived at his foster home and is getting all acquainted and adjusted to foster home life :) He gets along great with his foster furbrother Ernie and has discovered that lounging on the couch is one of his new favorite things. He saw the vet to get his eyes checked out...the vet feels that he is most likely completely blind in his right eye. He has a detached lens and atrophy of the retina. He also has a cataract in his left eye so sees somewhat limited in that eye. The vet also says that it looks like he had an abnormal reaction to dilating drops in that left eye at some point which left his pupil permanently dilated. It doesn't seem to bother him and he gets around great so his eyes have likely been this way for a while.
12/15 UPDATE from Tucker (now known as Bert)'s foster mom....
Bert has settled right in to our household. He’s a laid back guy and, while he loves going for walks, he seems to really like hanging out with the family and being a total couch potato. He isn’t a demanding dog in terms of exercise. He is a real love bug and wants to crawl right into your lap (all 78 lbs!) and snuggle.
He does have vision problems, which is apparent when you look into his eyes, but he gets around just fine. He seems to see pretty well, even at night. He has no trouble crawling into bed in the dead of night. I have seen him bump into things on his right side (his worse eye apparently) but he will chase a ball fine and I’ve seen him chase squirrels as well.
He isn’t picky with his food, he’ll eat whatever you put down in front of him. But he is kind of itchy, so we are trying out a grain free diet to see if this will help.
He walks well on a leash, but does have problems when another dog crosses our path. He will bark and pull. We are doing some training with a gentle leader to see if this will solve this issue.
Bert requires some warming up to other dogs, but he gets along great with our young male Ernie. They frequently cuddle together on the couch.
Bert would be a great dog for a family who wants a more laid back, easy going boxer.
Special Needs: Tucker will need a home with no cats.
