Mack is recovering from extensive surgery for a bowel obstruction.  Among other items a rubber ball was removed.  They also had to remove a section of his colon but he is expected to make a full recovery.  He has already eaten and the plumbing seems to be working :)  Mack will spend a few more days at the vet clinic as he is still very weak then he will move to his temporary foster home to continue his recovery.

UPDATE!!  Mack was released from the vet clinic yesterday and is now in his foster home.  He is a good boy.  He hasn't had any accidents in the house. He is eating good, no vomit, and diarrhea is clearing up. Other than being very skinny, he is doing great!!!

FROM HIS KENTUCKY FOSTER MOM:
This cuties name is Mack. He nearly died due to having an intestinal blockage (a chewed up rubber ball) that prevented him from being able to keep food down for 2 weeks. When forced by animal control to take him to the vet, the owner was going to euthanize him, but was convinced to surrender instead. He was emaciated and in a lot of pain. He had emergency surgery and had to be hospitalized and eat a special diet for a while. But he is a tough pup and pulled through beautifully, and is well on his way to getting his weight back up.

Mack is now neutered and vaccinated. He is negative for heartworm, lyme, and ehrlichia diseases. We estimate him to be about 7 months old. Mack is now off all his medications and eats regular puppy food. He is 90% house trained. He has not shown any signs of food aggression like you will see in some starved pets. In his foster home, he shares space and attention with 4 dogs, 5 cats, and a 2 year old human.

MACK WANTS TO BE WITH PEOPLE. He loves going places with me and is happy to meet strangers. He prefers going outside on a leash with me over being in the fenced yard with other dogs. He could live happily with another friendly male dog, but definitely prefers female dogs. He can play kind of rough which might bother an older dog.  He has not shown any signs that he would actually hurt a cat, but he will chase and annoy them.

Mack would likely be a good dog with older children, but the fast, erratic, and loud ways of a toddler seem to make him anxious. He can sometimes be "mouthy" in a playful way, but never actually bites or hurts (we are working on this behavior).

He is very good in his crate at night. He goes in the crate with a treat, never makes a mess, and is quiet usually right away.

MACK HAS A VERY LOVABLE AND GOOFY PERSONALITY, he is very trainable, and would be so happy as a house dog that gets to wrestle with a doggy girlfriend then snuggle up on the couch with a human friend!

THE LATEST ON MACK!!

Mack came to us this September from Kentucky.  He’s had his first Minnesota snow and has loved it--although he’s not quite sure about the bitterly cold weather!  Why is it so cold in the morning? Brr!! What’s a young southern gent supposed to think?! He has had such a hard first start at life, but with love and time, he has come into his own adorable, snuggling, clumsy, dorky self.  Mack currently is sharing our home where we have a female medium sized puggle and a dog-savvy cat.

Mack is currently eating Prescription Purina EN Food, with a probiotic sprinkled on top once a day in the morning.  He isn’t super into his food, but that might be since it’s kind of bland…I’m assuming.  Hopefully, within time we will be able to switch him to regular food.  The vet thought it was possible, which would be great!  Once he sees his treats his eyes bulge out a little.  We are used to this with our puggle and cat, and Mack could have picked up on this behavior from them.  ;-)

His plumbing works wellthough he has had a couple of accidents in the house, at first. I feel that was due to us getting to know each other’s schedules.  Once we got on schedule, he has not had any accidents and I feel very confident in him being housebroken.

Mack is such a friendly dog.  He loves visitors and gets along with everyone—dogs and (dog savvy) cats, males, females, humans young and old(er)—and loves kids.   My friend came over with her 7 year old daughter and she and he hung out all night.  He followed her throughout the whole night.  He loves to cuddle right up next to you any chance he gets.  But he also loves to play with our dog and cat.  He is super loyal, wants to know where everyone is at all times.  I’ve seen him searching for my boyfriend in the house when we are upstairs and he is downstairs watching TV, most likely football.

Mack would do best with an active family or person, since he is still young and playful.  As with being young, he does need work with some manners and being on a walk.  He likes to please so I think he’ll learn quickly.  He doesn’t need a ton of exercise, but would do well with another dog, person or family that would be able to give him the attention he deserves.  I don’t think he’s had much exposure to toys in his past life, so I would introduce them to him slowly.  He does play with rope toys right now, but hates any squeaky toys.

He is such a good dog and we are so lucky we’ve gotten to know him and help mold him into a nice young dog for a lucky family. Also it should be noted that Mack is super good looking (we always get compliments on how good looking he is) and we know he would love to hear it every day with more love and snuggles.

Please consider Mack as your next family member.  You won’t regret it!

THE LATEST:  Mack is now on regular food...yay!!  He still needs the probiotic but is doing great being off of the special food :)  He still needs to be watched closely that he doesn't eat any people food or anything to upset his digestive system.
