He is still good with other dogs (unsure about cats – we don’t have any). We still have one other dog in our home (a female) and he gets along great with her. We were also taking him to doggy daycare once a week and he does well there (best if he has a toy or ball to carry around – because not all dogs appreciate his boxer way of playing). He is boisterous and noisy when he plays. Sometimes his “boofing” and growling gets him in trouble with other dogs. As long as he has a toy to carry around in his mouth, he is happy as a clam and will run with the other dogs. He also swims!
Tux is very good with our daughter. She is 2.5 years old. She loves to feed Tux and give him treats. He is surprisingly patient with her. Our only concern with the two of them is that Tux is very high energy and we keep a close eye on him with her because we worry he would knock her down. Other than that, we have had no concerns about him with our daughter. She loves to hug him and pet him.
As for temperament, Tux is VERY high energy. The reason we started doing doggy daycare was because he needed another outlet for his energy. He will go, go, go all the time when he is playing. I don’t think he knows when to stop. He loves to run and to play fetch. He needs A LOT of exercise. He is also a barker. He protects the house and lets us know when anything moves outside the door.
We do not currently have a fenced yard (we moved a year and a half ago and were planning to put one in this year), but I do think it would help Tux to be able to burn off some energy if he had a fenced yard. It would not be necessary though. He wanders the neighborhood sometimes, but he has never been one to “escape” or run away and not come home. He is most often very good about staying in the yard.
He is a jumper. We have been working on this for a very long time, but it is just Tux. We joke that he is “spring loaded”. He has a very high vertical! He jumps when he greets anyone new – at the door, out in public. It is just Tux’s greeting.
We have done extensive obedience training with Tux, but his excitement always wins out. We have a few tips that can help, but they need to be consistently followed for him to do well with them. In all honesty, since our daughter was born, we have not been able to stay as consistent as we should have. However, if his new owners are diligent about staying on top of training, he would do well, I think.
Tux is a lover. If he gets in your lap, he gets ALL the way in your lap and will lean into you to the point of knocking you over. He cannot get close enough. He love being the center of attention and will even shove our female dog out of the way to get all the rubs and loves.
He has an uncontrollable obsession with water. We have to limit how much we give him. This is another area where he just doesn’t know when to stop. He will drink so much that he then regurgitates the water. We give him plenty of water throughout the day, but all in small doses. He will also have an accident if he drinks too much and then can’t get outside. Sometimes it is a much faster turnaround time from drinking to “potty time” than you would expect. He has been checked for kidney and liver functions and all are normal!
Tux has been a lot of fun. He has and undeniable energy and zest for life. He is a sweet and funny boy and we are all very sad that it has had to come to this. I truly hope that you can find him another wonderful home.
7/30: Tux is doing well since arriving at his Minnesota foster home!
From his foster mom: Tux is doing great! Gets along with our Hazel, comes when he is called. He will let you know when someone is here, but when visitors come over he just greets them. He is kenneled at night and is really good at it. He is iffy with our outside cats, but will "leave it", when told. He has very good obedience! And he is such a lover!
Special Needs: Tux' perfect home will have a fenced-in yard.
